Association DIGIRES on April 11th remotely organized a professional development seminar for teachers “How to recognize the truth: recipes of a fact-checker”, during which experts shared the methods of checking information and presented methodical material prepared by the association for media literacy classes. The seminar attracted the interest of more than 160 participants.
The head of the DIGIRES association and chief researcher, professor of the Department of Public Communication at Vytautas Magnus University, Auksė Balčytienė, said that a lot of false information reaches us in the digital space, which creates conflict and seeks to destroy trust in institutions. According to the professor, although in the era of artificial intelligence we no longer know who provides us the information, we still have high-quality, valuable information created by journalists and scientists.
Journalist Brigita Sabaliauskaitė presented the working principles of journalists. According to the lecturer, the job of a public relations specialist is to discover benefits and communicate them, while a journalist’s job is to look for critical points, raise problems, and present various opinions.
Ieva Ivanauskaitė, Head of Business Development at the news portal “Delfi”, said that the development of technology affects how and what content we consume. According to the lecturer, the competitive environment is becoming very tense, it is becoming difficult for the media to survive in it, to earn money that would be used to pay for the work of professional journalists.
Aistė Meidutė, editor, journalist and fact-checker of the “Lie Detector” project of the news portal “Delfi”, presented fact-checkers’ databases, introduced the tools for checking images, and demonstrated how to use them in practice.
Neringa Jurčiukonytė, the head of the “Media4Change” program, presented the methodology developed by the DIGIRES association for media literacy classes and shared insights on how to use it.
Professor Kristina Juraitė, head of the Department of Public Communication at VMU, presented the evaluation strategies that can be applied during the classes.
